About this site

We will use this website to communicate vacancy information and employability resources which may be of interest to you as students in the School of Languages, Cultures and Societies. It is divided into the following sections:

  • Events – details of careers events organised by the School will be listed here. We will also share with you details of events being organised within the University which may be of particular interest to LCS students.
  • General vacancies – graduate, part-time and vacation jobs, work placements and volunteering opportunities .
  • Year & Term Abroad Placements – work/voluntary placement opportunities for the Term and Year Abroad in French, German, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese-speaking countries
  • Optional Placement Year – work/voluntary placements for students on 3 year programmes which do not have a compulsory Year Abroad
  • Translation Studies – graduate jobs and work placements for students in the Centre for Translation Studies
  • Alumni Voices Abroad – LCS alumni talk about their experience of University and reflect on how it helped them secure employment after their studies.

We treat advertisements from companies who contact us in good faith. As it is not feasible for us to carry out detailed quality checks, you should carefully investigate advertised opportunities by carrying out web searches and by asking for testimonials from others who have worked for the organisation. This applies in particular for the overseas opportunities that we are posting. Consider googling the organisation name, organisation URL, contact email address and names of any principal managers to read what good/bad feedback is available. If feedback is only available on the organisation’s website, consider sending a follow-up email to the person leaving the feedback.

For Translation vacancies, the Proz.com Blue Board is a good source of information. In the UK you can check that limited companies are registered with Companies House by consulting the register of companies (the basic check is free of charge). You can read the annual returns of charities registered in England and/or Wales on the Charity Commission website.

Don’t forget that you can also find opportunities targeted at Leeds students and graduates on the Careers Centre exclusive jobs database.
